| Is
Obama a Christian?
Yes,
Obama is a Christian who was baptized at Trinity United
Church of Christ in Chicago in 1988.
Obama
writes that he was not raised in a religious household.
His father was raised a muslim but was a non-believer as
an adult. Obama's mother was not interested in organized
religion.
While
working with black churches in his twenties, Obama became
a Christian. He is not, nor has he ever been, a muslim.
Jeremiah
Wright was pastor of Trinity until early 2008. He was
Obama's pastor until his retirement. Some of Wright's
fiery sermons, which were aimed at empowering poor, inner
city African Americans, were considered controversial and caused problems
for Obama, who condemned them and broke with his former
pastor.
Wright is a respected figure in Chicago. Though
Trinity is a largely African-American church, it welcomes
white people; it is not anti-white as was stated by some
news sources and bloggers.
WHY
THE RUMORS? Mr. Obama's political
opponents believed they could dissuade people from voting
for him by creating doubts about his Christianity. |
